            The sunlight, the source of energy on which existence of living entities depends, is source of many harmful radiations like Ultraviolet B (UV B). Earth atmosphere prevents most of radiations to reach the earth surface. Because of ozone depletion more radiations now reach the earth surface. When the partially dressed body is exposed to sun UV B damages the DNA causing a skin burn called sunburn like suntan if the exposure is moderate. Body defense system produces excess amount of melanin, a skin photo-protection pigment, to repair the damaged DNA. Melanin reacts with UV-photons to produce harmless amount of heat (suntan). If the exposure is too much skin is burn causing first and second degree sunburns and even skin cancer like basal-cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.

            Redness of the skin and then pain are the initial symptoms of sunburn. Edema (abnormal accumulation of fluid beneath the skin), itching, peeling skin, rash, nausea, fever, blisters on shoulders, and syncope (fainting) are also the symptoms of sunburn. It takes less than 15 minutes exposure to sun to have sunburn and seconds exposure to non-shielded welding arcs to have sunburn.

            One should apply some lotions like anti-inflammatory medication before going to a doctor (Dermatologist) as soon as symptoms are observed. Some recommended practices to treat sunburn:

                        Aloe Vera Plant – rub gelatinous part obtained after opening the leaf of the Aloe Vera plant over the burned areas, apply as often as needed. Use mild lotion before going to bed to keep the body moist.

                        Dress – Loose cotton (no polyester) dress, does not irritate the burn area, if at home dress as minimum cloth as possible, use soft cotton blanket when sitting on sofa/couch to prevent rubbing against upholstery.

                        Medication – use inflammatory tablets like ibuprofen for fever, headache.

                        Lotion – Use facial Noxema cleanser (blue tubs) to relieve heat and sting from sunburn, rub over the burn as much as and as often as possible

                        Cool damp cloth soaked in skim milk – place over the burn to create a protein film to minimize the discomfort

                        Drink – water, juice, sports drinks to avoid dehydration

                        Bath – use lukewarm water without soap to avoid irritation, a warm shower can help ease pain and itchiness, a bath with green tea (tannin in green tea soothes the redness and pain.    

                        Spray – for extremely painful use a spray with lidocane (a topical anesthetic) from a drugstore until the burn heals.

                        Paste – make a paste with baking soda and water and apply on burn area

Remedy for burns, 1: 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, 2 tablespoons of sour cream and 1 egg yolk of fresh eggs. All components are thoroughly mixed and grease burns to the skin several times a day.
Remedy for burns, 2: 10 white tablets streptocide crushed into powder, mixed with 100 g of vegetable oil and 30 minutes to put in a steam bath. Cool and lubricate these drugs burns several times a day.
